The Workshop has held in cooperation with the International Center
of Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR) in October 24-November 04 in Beijing
and Zhejiang Province, China. The major objectives of the workshop
were to train participants from INBAR member countries on the on-the-ground
and remote sensing methods for the bamboo resources assessment.
Over 40 invitees participated in the training workshop, representing
INBAR member countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
The first week of the workshop was allocated
for the presentations and discussions on various field and remote
sensing techniques pertinent to bamboo inventory. The second week
of the workshop was conducted in the field in Anji area of Zhejiang
Province, where workshop participants learned and practiced methods
for bamboo field and remote sensing inventory assessment, using
global positioning system, and interpreting satellite images. In
addition, the participants also learnt Chinese practices of bamboo
and rattan sustainable management and utilization. The main outcome
of the training workshop was launching two Task Forces to create
on-the ground and remote bamboo resources assessment. Both Task
Forces are led by the INBAR's specialists: Dr. FuJinhe (on-the-ground)
and Mr. Shyam Paudel (remote assessment). The manuals are to be
completed by the end of 2006.
