5 to 30 January 2004

Banglore, India

Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI) has done considerable work on bamboo housing with the support of TRADA UK. Few demonstration bamboo buildings have already been built which are attractive and cheaper.

They adopted to –

¨       use round bamboo columns and trussed rafters as main load bearing elements

¨       use of split bamboo grids and chicken mesh and plastered with cement mortar to provide overall stability to the structure

¨       apply BORON to treat bamboo grids and trusses and  Creosote oil to treat columns

¨       use of Bamboo Mat Board (BMB) gussets in combination with mild steel bolts for load bearing joints in roofing structure and

¨       use of Bamboo Mat Corrugated  Sheet (BMCS) as roof claddings

INBAR along with CIBART (Center for Indian Bamboo Resouce Technology) and IPIRTI organised a training workshop on bamboo housing from January 5 to 30 2004 at IPIRTI Banglore, India. Total of 9 participants from India, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and INBAR participated the event. The participants were from different backgrounds viz. engineering, architecture, artisan, building and forestry.

During 25 days of the training period, participants received training on bamboo preservation and bamboo building construction. The training course was mainly designed for hands-on with very few theoretical lectures. In addition to the IPIRTI system the participants also practised Latin American bahareque system. They made a sample bahareque wall with the support of INBAR staff. Mr H.G. Reddy (Civil engineer; email hg-reddy@yahoo.com) and S.
