WWF Yunan Project

Promotion of Energy Efficient Buildings: Integration of Bamboo and Renewable Energy Technologies

Objectives

1. Low cost and higher energy performance houses/buildings;
2. Reduce the use of wood and red brick as building material in rural areas;
3. Help promote bamboo industry development and create employment;
4. Establish new models for building sector development, which may be wide disseminated in other parts of China, and in other developing countries.

Done so far

1. Concept designs for buildings and houses were completed in August 2002. Those designs include 1 school, 1 tourist hotel, 3 houses for rural/town people at different income levels (high, middle and low).
2. The Japanese embassy in Beijing approved to provide building expenses of RMB 620,000 for one of the designs, that is the a primary school in Pingbian, Yunnan province. This school building will be as a demonstration of EE building in Yunnan, will be completed by February 2004.
3. Two Chinese architects were sent to the Netherlands in 2002 for a one-month training on energy-efficient housing design.
4. Involvement of media for the promotion and population of EE building in China.
5. More bamboo construction materials have been developed under this project.
