Commercialization of Pre-fabricated Bamboo Modular Housing Through Strategic Public Private Partnership

Population growth, rapid rural-urban migration, inadequate housing for the poor and an unsustainable use of forest resources, require alternative, affordable and environmentally friendly housing solutions. Due to bamboo’s versatile nature, it provides a suitable solution to these problems. This project consisted of three phases, while the first two consisted of the testing of engineered bamboo houses and the construction of buildings made of engineered bamboo components in Beijing. The highlights of phase three are the development of three types of engineered bamboo housing technologies. Demonstration buildings were built in Sri Lanka, China, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. Two demonstration sites were also established in Beijing.
