Neelam Manjunath

Ar. Neelam Manjunath is an architect, planner, scientist, activist and theoretician, with two graduate degrees: Bsc, Agra University, 1982, and B. Architecture, Government College of Architecture, Lucknow. Her education, however, is much wider, with skills related to sustainable architecture, media architecture and Charrettee training from GSD, Harvard University, and a PG Dip in Theology, Dayalbagh University, Agra.

Her practice, Manasaram Architects, has been based in Bangalore since 1994. Her architecture is distinguished for healing the biosphere and wellbeing of society through use of sustainable materials and technologies with special emphasis on bamboo. Her work has been published widely and presented in several national and international forums. She is on several national and international technical committees regarding sustainability and bamboo.

She is the CEO, Founder and Managing Trustee of the Centre for Green Building Materials and Technology, Bangalore, and CGBMT School of Simple Living doing research and development, and training on sustainability and bamboo since 2004. She was nominated a World Bamboo Ambassador by the World Bamboo Organisation in January 2018. She is Chair of the Karnataka Chapter and a National Governing Council Member of the Bamboo Society of India. From 2013 onwards, she has also advised on sustainability and bamboo affairs for the Dayalbagh Educational Institute, Dayalbagh, Agra, and from 2019 for the Karnataka State Bamboo Mission.

She has won several national and international nominations and awards: the Sir M Vishwesvaraya Prize, New Delhi (2005), the IIA-Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Award (2005), the World Architecture Community awards (2013), the Lafarge Invention Awards (2011), the World Architecture News Awards (2013), a nomination for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2013), an award for lifetime contribution to the bamboo sector at ‘International Bamboo Conclave’, Bangalore (2014), the Merit List (2015-16), the ARCASIA Awards for Architecture (2017) and more.
