In the Indian forestry sector, bamboo is the most important sub-sector. Forests, in India, being in the state list of subjects for long time, and in the last two decades, there has been a drastic change in forest policy and the orientation of forest management in India. In the light of these changes in national policy, it is important to study the existing institutions of bamboo production to consumption system; changes in these institutions, and the interactions between the other forestry institutions that have subsequently emerged. China, another country where bamboo is the major sub-sector of forestry sector, has undergone many stages of reforms, including the bamboo sector, in the last two decades. The results of these reforms have been outstanding. Hence, a comparative study of the institutions in India and China will provide useful inputs to the designers of institutions in India.
