UNFCCC COP 25

Bamboo can play an important role as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation and adaptation: as a fast-growing and naturally regenerative carbon sink; as a source of durable products and housing, which can replace wood- or fossil fuel-based materials; and as a drought- and flood-resistant, naturally regenerative source of year-round income.

INBAR is an Observer to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and a member of the Nature-Based Solutions Coalition established in 2019 at the UN Climate Action Summit. INBAR will be attending COP 25 in Madrid. Delegates at COP 25 are more than welcome to attend any of the below side events, or to get in touch with INBAR to arrange a meeting.

Achieving NDC Targets Through Bioeconomy

15:00-16:30, Monday 9 December, Room 6

This side event, co-hosted by INBAR, the UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) and Brazilian organisation Center of Management of Strategic Studies (CGEE), showcases how bioeconomy and successful South-South and triangular cooperation contribute to the achievement of NDC targets in developing countries. The new joint flagship publication by the UNOSSC and CGEE, to which INBAR has contributed a case study, will be launched and distributed at this event.

Addressing Climate Change with Nature-Based Solutions

11:00-12:30, Tuesday 10 December, China Pavilion

This side event, hosted by China’s Ministry of Ecology and the Environment and organised by the National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation, looks at the ways in which nature-based solutions can support climate change mitigation and adaptation. INBAR will contribute to a panel discussion about the role of bamboo in China’s, and international, climate change policies.

Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastics

18:00—19:30, Wednesday 11 December, China Pavilion

Co-organised by the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR) and the International Centre for Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR) of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China, this event will provide a platform for delegates from governments, universities, research institutes and the private sector to discuss the potential of bamboo as a substitute for plastics. This event aims to draw international attention to bamboo as a nature-based solution for plastic pollution and climate change prevention, and should encourage more countries to incorporate bamboo into their national development strategies and action plans.

High-Level Forum on South-South Cooperation on Climate Change

14:00-17:30, Wednesday 11 December, China Pavilion

INBAR will be speaking at this event, which is co-hosted by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China and the UN Office for South-South Cooperation, supported by Environmental Defense Fund.

The goal of the event is to «sustain and mobilise enhanced support and actions for pragmatic South-South and triangular cooperation on climate change, so as to strengthen the momentum on the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the transition to a low-carbon and climate resilience development pathway.» The theme of the High-Level Forum of this year is: “South-South Climate Cooperation in Supporting Low Carbon and Green Development Transition in Developing Countries”.
