Bamboo can substitute for natural timber and bamboo plantations can help reduce pressure from natural timber resources. Although bamboo is recommended for plantation development in Ghana, it is underrepresented compared to the traditional plantation species. This paper draws from a study of incentives for the development of bamboo plantations in Ghana where tenure security emerged as a most desired incentive among small-scale plantation developers and as an intermediate desired incentive among large-scale plantation developers. An overview of the tenure system in Ghana is presented and the significance of tenure security to the development of bamboo plantations is briefly discussed. A recommendation at resolving the uncertainties surrounding tenure security is proposed and it is concluded that tenure security is important for the establishment of bamboo plantations in Ghana.
