UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP 27

INBAR is an Observer to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and will be attending the 2022 Conference of the Parties (COP) 27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to raise awareness about the potential of bamboo to support climate change mitigation and adaptation, by storing carbon, creating low-carbon products, reducing plastic pollution and providing a source of climate-resilient income to vulnerable communities.

INBAR will organize the following sessions:

 

The potential of bamboo as a material for sustainable construction and circular economic development (Session 1)

Date: Monday, 14 November 2022

Time: 11:00-13:00 (GMT+2 Egypt) | 17:00-19:00 (GMT+8 Beijing)

Location: UN Climate Change Global Innovation Hub Pavilion – Blue Zone

The session will cover the potential of bamboo as a sustainable construction material followed by presentations by technical experts from China, Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Myanmar and the Philippines who will share the latest construction technologies for building bamboo shelters in different regions of the world. The session will also deliberate on the policy, strategy and other tools that have been developed and applied in INBAR Member States that are aimed at scaling up the use of bamboo as a nature-based solution to solve the shortages of housing as well as replacing energy-intensive materials for easy scaling up and replication.

The Global Innovation Hub at Pavilion at COP 27 will highlight the potential of bamboo as a material for sustainable construction and circular economic development.

 

Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastics Initiative (Session 2)

Date: Wednesday, 16 November 2022

Time: 14:00-15:30 (GMT+2 Egypt) | 20:00-21:30 (GMT+8 Beijing)

Location: China Pavilion

This side event will deliberate on how bamboo can help to reduce plastic pollution covering regulations on plastic restrictions in different regions and exploring the enabling framework and market development necessary for promoting bamboo as a plastic alternative.
