Theme: Bamboo and Industry Development

Introduction:

China, India and Vietnam are three countries with long history of bamboo utilization and culture. In the past 40 years, the three countries have been leading in bamboo industrial development.  However, their development paths are quite different. This session aims at sharing major experiences of their national bamboo development.

Speakers:

Dr. Fei Benhua, Executive Deputy Director General of International Center for Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR) of the China National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA).  Dr. Fei has long been engaged in wood science researches and had chaired 10 national projects. As the Research Professor, Ph.D. Supervisor and Chief Expert of Research Center of Bamboo & Rattan Biomass and New Materials of ICBR,  His studies of key manufacture technology of bamboo engineered materials, systematic analysis of mechanical characterization of bamboo and wood cell wall and relational research on bamboo/wood property and forest cultivation lay solid foundations for future studies in China.

Dr. A. K. Bhattacharya, Chairman of the India Integrated Development Organisation, Managing Director of the Bamboo Entrepreneurship Development Foundation. Dr. Bhattacharya is Dr Bhattacharya is Doctorate (Ph D) and Post Doctorate in Ecology (Environmental Pollution), and a life-long bamboo forester and national level environmentalist and bamboo advocator.  As the Managing Director, Madhya Pradesh State Bamboo Mission & CEO, he pioneered in establishing India’s first Ecotourism Development Board and institutionalize bamboo-based entrepreneurship.

Dr. Phan Van Thang, Director of Non-Timber Forest Products Research Centre of Vietnam (NTFPRC), a national research institution focusing on Non Timber Forest Products (NTFP) conservation and sustainable development issues. He has been working as senior researcher at NTFPRC from 1996 to now. Dr. Phan Van Thang received his Ph.D. in NTFP Silviculture from Vietnamese Academy of Forest Sciences and M. A. in NTFP Silviculture from Vietnam National University of Forestry, Hanoi, Vietnam.
