Theme: Bamboo for Poverty Reduction and Livelihood Development
Objective:
Including bamboo in farming systems and households has the potential to increase income, employment opportunities and well as contribute to the overall wellbeing of rural livelihoods and the environment in a multifaceted way. This session will provide a general overview of ways and means by which bamboo can be integrated into the farming systems and the benefits thereof, and will showcase three agroforestry models or research: an example each from China, India and Vietnam.
Speakers:
Dr Xie Jinzhong – Director, Researcher and Supervisor of Bamboo Collaborative Innovation and International Cooperation Center, the Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry, the Chinese Academy of Forestry. Secretary-General, Chinese Bamboo Society. Member of the editorial board of journals Bamboo Journal and International Bamboo and Rattan Communication.
Dr. Rajesh Kaushal – Principal Scientist (Forestry) at the Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation. He has 15 years of experiences in sympodial bamboo plantation management. He was involved in INBAR’s South-South Programme as a capacity building expert. He has published over 70 papers in both national and international peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Dang Thinh Trieu – Senior researcher at the Silviculture Research Institute, Vietnamese Academy of Forest Science with over twenty years national and international experience in forest rehabilitation and management in particular, in sustainable management of bamboo. He has over 20 books and peer reviewed papers to his credit.
