Theme: Bamboo for Poverty Reduction and Livelihood Development


Bamboo is integral to the culture, lives and livelihoods of numerous communities. It has proven potential to contribute to rural poverty reduction and provide year-round income, economically empower marginalised communities as well as protect the environment. This session will focus on different pro-poor livelihood development approaches using bamboo and/or enterprise models validated by different countries and/or organisations aimed at poverty reduction and rural livelihood development. During the session, presentations on large scale industrial led development models, private sector led craft enterprise, housing and social enterprise models will be showcased.


Prof. Zhu Zhaohua: Former Deputy Director General, INBAR; Honorary Chairman of China Forest Ecology Association; Former Director of the Department of International Cooperation/ International Farm Forestry Training Centre, Chinese Academy of Forestry (CAF). He is a veteran in bamboo sector, a well-known scientist who had made outstanding contributions to the forestry and bamboo sector. He is a renowned author and published numerous articles and books. Mr. Pablo Izquierdo: Technical Officer, INBAR, Latin America and Caribbean. He has over ten years of experience in sustainable development with focus on rural development, family farming, food sovereignty, diversified production, alternative marketing and short market circuits. He has immensely contributed to formulation of regional, national and local public policy designs with multi-stakeholder participatory approach.  Download presentation.

Mr. Thai Ba Phuong: Deputy Director, Duc Phong Limited Company, Nghe An province, Vietnam. Duc Phong Limited was established in 2001, first of its kind in Nghe An province that specialises in production of bamboo handicraft products for exports. The company produces bamboo handicrafts products worth USD 1 million per year and exports to over 35 countries worldwide. Download presentation.

Dr. Selim Reza: Programme Manager, INBAR. He has 17 years of experiences in cluster based bamboo enterprise development, in India and East Africa. He is recipient of a National Award (2012) from the President of India; and Science and Technology award from Government of Tripura. He has contributed to eight book chapters and published over 30 research papers. Download presentation.
