Sustainable Management of Tropical Sympodial Bamboo Resources

Sustainable Management of Tropical Sympodial Bamboo Resources

Yunnan Province, located in the southwest of China, has the country’s richest bamboo biodiversity, with over 250 bamboo species belonging to 29 genera.  With its tropical climate, Yunnan hosts a wide range of tropical sympodial bamboo species including economically important bamboo species such as Dendrocalamas sinicus, D. giganteus, D. brandisii, Bambusa vulgaris, and B. Chungii.  Importantly, there are a number of research institutes in Yunnan focusing on resource development and value addition of sympodial bamboo resources.

Many African, Asian and Latin American countries host tropical or sympodial bamboo species. The experiences and knowledge of Yunnan is applicable to most bamboo-growing countries.
