Bamboo for Economic Resilience and Post Covid-19 Economic Recovery

India is one of the worst sufferers of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The unprecedented lockdowns and market disruptions have caused large scale unemployment in the country. The most impacted are the people working in the informal or unorganized sector such as daily wage laborers, small businesses, factory workers, small scale farmers, farm laborers and vulnerable groups.

In these unprecedented times, bamboo can be a potential means for economic resilience and post Covid-19 recovery. The project intends to assess the economic opportunities having social and environmental relevance and draw appropriate action strategies for generating enterprising/ livelihood avenues using Bamboo resources in India. The project is aimed at the communities that have suffered as a result of the market disruptions caused by the pandemic, particularly those working in informal sectors.

Objectives

The broad objectives and deliverables of the project are:

  • Undertake a study on “Bamboo for economic resilience and recovery from Covid-19” and identify market opportunities for the potential products.
  • Identify a list of product designs and develop prototypes for scaling up in consultation with technical institutions, designers, artisans and entrepreneurs.
  • Document the production process with technical details along with the Social, Economic and Environmental Benefits of the identified product ideas.
  • Create an outline of the training program for artisans and entrepreneurs for initiating and/or scaling-up their production.
2021

The project has undertaken a quick study of the existing and potential market for bamboo products in different segments like lifestyle, utilities and housing and construction material. It has also identified impact making products ideas and organized a consultation meeting with leading design schools (namely the World University of Design, the National Institute of Design and the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology), individual designers and entrepreneurs to explore the bamboo product design ideas relevant for the changed market scenario due to Covid-19 led pandemic. The market study report and action strategy are expected to be finalized in 2022 along with product design and business profiles of 5 impact making product ideas to scale up.
