Support for sustainable construction through the Manabi workshop school and the strengthening of the production chain of bamboo construction

This project seeks to contribute to the problem of the housing deficit in the country from a different perspective than just providing housing. It will also contribute to the mitigation of climate change and the generation of local employment. It will generate capacities that will guarantee the housing quality and the correct use of bamboo by training qualified labor. In addition, It will contribute to the strengthening beginning of the production chain by training bamboo producers in sustainable management, harvesting and post-harvesting, guaranteeing a high-quality raw material.

Objectives

The general objective of this project is to contribute to the consolidation of the social housing policy in Ecuador with environmental sustainability and local development criteria.

Specific Objectives:

  • Contribute to the sustainable construction of houses and social infrastructure with bamboo.
  • Contribute to the mitigation and adaptation of the effects of climate change and local economic development in the province of Manabi.
Project Activities

In 2021, the project contributed to the approval of municipal ordinances that enable and create incentives for the construction, conservation and sustainable use of Guadua and other bamboo in the cantons of Portoviejo and El Carmen.

Through the Manabi Workshop School for Sustainable Constructions with Bamboo, 30 teachers specialized in sustainable constructions with bamboo have updated their knowledge and 74 young people are in the process of receiving training and getting certified. Through field schools, more than 120 producers have been trained in sustainable bamboo management.

In addition, there are several prototypes of public and community bamboo infrastructure built in different areas of the Manabí province and two well-established community bamboo preservation centers.
