Very little is known about the distribution and ecological roles of bamboo, particularly outside of Asia. This report is a first step towards quantifying existing resources of bamboo and their ecological importance in Africa, Madagascar and the Americas. Knowledge of the magnitude and distribution of these resources is a necessary precursor to planning and implementing conservation and sustainable management of bamboos in the wild. The report was written in collaboration with UNEP-WCMC, whose detailed map-based databases made development of the methodology possible. |
