Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) contribute to livelihoods of about 2 billion poorest of the rural and urban poor, and are among the most valuable plant resources for present and future food security. They provide food, fuel, medicine and incomes, and keep traditional knowledge alive. NTFPs have an important role in forests and – consequently – in their conservation. Climate change efforts targeted to forests traditionally focused on trees as means of creating and protecting forest carbon stocks. Forests, however, are made up of more than trees. This paper, therefore, explores the potential role and contribution of NTFPs in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Moreover, this paper develops recommendations to strengthen, protect, and advocate the role of NTFPs in strategic efforts to combat and adapt to climate change.
