In view of the importance of bamboo to Central India in aiding subsistence and improving livelihoods, INBAR commissioned two studies on this region under its Socio-economics and Policy Program. This report provides a more general picture of the region, with emphasis on Madhya Pradesh, a major bamboo-growing state of India. This research project is based on the analysis of a natural forest-based bamboo production-to consumption system was initiated in June 1995 around three villages situated in the vicinity of bamboo dominated forests.
