The 2022 International Yong’an Bamboo Expo (online) convenes

Held virtually this year, the expo brought together multi-disciplinary experts to build consensus on the integration of bamboo in green development schemes.

Expo seeks to elevate the role of bamboo in a key region, with INBAR playing a crucial role.

On 8 December 2022, under the theme “Technology for Bamboo, Digital Empowerment, Green Development, Low-carbon Life,” the 2022 International Yong’ an Bamboo Expo (Online) kicked off. The expo aimed to enhance the core competitiveness of the Yong’an bamboo industry, drive the development of commerce and logistics, bamboo research and development, bamboo household products, and bamboo cultural tourism through a series of bamboo industry-related activities, promoting the integrated development of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries.

INBAR Deputy Director Lu Wenming gave a speech at the expo.

INBAR Deputy Director General Lu Wenming delivered a video speech, remarking on the special role INBAR and the government of Yong’an are playing in leading the joint effort to integrate bamboo into sustainable development programs, emphasizing new wisdom and learned lessons to promote the scientific and technological innovation of bamboo and rattan. The Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic Initiative, co-launched by INBAR and the government of China, was particularly highlighted as crucial to achieving future success in the area.

Bamboo has been used in China for thousands of years. When it comes to plastic waste and global ecosystems, bamboo has nigh-infinite possibilities. Bamboo absorbs carbon dioxide more effectively than trees. The fast-growing plant can trap greenhouse gasses over a long period of time. It can also thrive with little soil on sloping hills and prevent erosion. Its durability is key to manufacturing. Bamboo is expected to help address a wide range of global challenges, including climate change, poverty alleviation and land degradation.

The expo also held a number of informational online activities and is set to announce the 2022 Bamboo Industry Design Leading Talents List. Experts and academics from inside and outside Sichuan Province, representatives of bamboo enterprises and designers gathered together in the “cloud” for a rewarding exchange of experiences and lessons.
